Boni Khalwale is a Kenyan politician who is both liked and despised, depending on one's political stance. He is an outspoken politician who has no reservations about expressing himself in the most enthusiastic manner. For example, as Agriculture Minister, he put President William Ruto on the spot about the maize scam. The former Kakamega senator is now Ruto's biggest supporter. He also chastised former Finance Minister Amos Kimunya over the sale of the Regency Hotel.
Education
He attended Malinya Primary School before moving on to Musingu Boys High School for his 'O' levels and Kakamega High School for his 'A' levels.
In 1981, the former senator enrolled at the University of Nairobi to study medicine. He received his diploma in 1987.
Family
He was born into a low-income family. In fact, because the school administration knew his parents couldn't afford shoes, he was allowed to walk barefoot in primary school.
Boni Khalwale is not an exception to the polygamous lifestyle practiced by many people in Western Kenya. The former Ikolomani Constituency Member of Parliament had multiple wives and children.
While still in his second year at the University of Nairobi, he married his first wife, Adelaide Shikanga. He could afford to maintain a wife since they were given a stipend of Ksh 1,500/, which was a lot of money back then. Adelide was still in second grade when they married. He afterwards returned her to school.
Adelide’s death
In October 2019, the outspoken politician was bereaved of his first wife. Adelaide died of cancer, as reported by her husband.
" In 2003, my wife was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was diagnosed with blood cancer this year. She had already completed her sixth chemotherapy session at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she had been cleared. "She developed pulmonary hypertension on Friday," Bony explained.
Dr. Khalwale's wife died in his arms as he was attempting to revive her.
" As soon as she collapsed, she summoned our housekeeper, who proceeded to find her unconscious." Mr. Khalwale added, "I sought to resuscitate my wife, who gasped her last breath in my hands."
Adelaide and her husband have been married for over four decades.
Professional Career
In 1988, he was hired by the government as a medical officer after graduating from university.
He went into private practice in Mombasa two years later before moving to Kakamega, where he worked until 2002.
Political career
He left his medical practice in 2002 to enter politics. He ran for and won the Ikolomani Constituency Member of Parliament seat on the NARC (National Rainbow Coalition) ticket. He previously served in the NCEC (National Convention Executive Council) alongside Mwai Kibaki, James Orengo, and Prof Kibwana, among others. This organization criticized President Moi's ideas and advocated for reforms. He was appointed Assistant Minister of the East African Community in 2006.
He is currently the senator for Kakamega county after ditching the opposition leader Raila Odinga and working with President William Ruto.
