Abby Chams's Biography in Summary

In her early years at just nine, Abigail Chamungwana, who is better recognized by her stage alias Abby Chams, demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for music, concurrently mastering three instruments – the piano, violin, and guitar. Her introduction to singing commenced as soon as she began speaking. Abby attributes her inherent talent and fervor for music to her family's deep-rooted association with the art. Her late grandfather, a musician and conductor within an orchestra, stood as a significant influence and became her initial piano instructor at the age of five.

Abby describes, "My journey in music began as far back as I can remember. My grandparents shared their musical talents, inspiring me to embark on this path. For years, I engaged in music lessons multiple times a week, and since then, my passion for music has only grown. It started as a hobby, something I did for pure enjoyment."

Now seventeen years old, Abby Chams has already spent a few years in the spotlight. Her ethereal voice first resonated across the world through social media. Launching her Instagram account about five years ago, her initial intent was to share her music and singing with close friends and family. However, time has seen her gather over 123,000 followers, including prominent Tanzanian artists such as Diamond Platnumz, Nandy, Ravanny, and Ben Pol.

Gospel music took root in Abby's life at a local church, aligning with her Christian upbringing. Abby's primary musical focus centers on gospel themes. Yet, she aspires to rejuvenate gospel music by infusing Afropop elements, aiming to engage a youthful audience. She explains, "One of my most popular songs, 'Zero to 100,' explores how God can uplift you during moments of despair. I want my gospel music to resonate with the youth. Many young people fear committing to faith, assuming it entails drastic changes in appearance and music preference. However, music can remain enjoyable and lively while delivering a potent message."

Her compositions serve to inspire and uplift those facing challenges. Abby believes that music holds a therapeutic essence. "Music has a healing quality. When I'm upset or having a bad day, playing the piano alleviates my stress. I want my music to bring happiness to listeners," she expresses.

Abby's music portfolio encompasses seven self-penned songs, showcasing her abilities as both a singer and composer. Alongside instrumental prowess, she has acquired musical theory knowledge through formal schooling. This empowers her to craft her own compositions. "I'm drawn to composing my own music because it's deeply personal. I often start with a melody and then find words to match it. Sometimes a lyric comes to mind first, and I build a melody around it. I also enjoy doing covers; some artists create music beyond my initial imagination," Abby elaborates.

While not presently signed to a label, Abby employs streaming platforms and social media to disseminate her music, attracting the attention of established artists who wish to collaborate. Her collaboration with Diamond Platnumz and participation in projects with Jokate Mwegelo, a District Commissioner, and UNICEF stand as testament to her expanding influence.

Beyond music, Abby has initiated a music school, teaching piano, guitar, and violin to around ten students. Recognizing the scarcity of accessible musical education in Tanzania, Abby aspires to encourage parents to support their children's musical passions. She firmly believes that learning a musical instrument benefits creativity, emotional expression, and cognitive skills. "Every child should learn to play a musical instrument," Abby asserts.

Having carved her platform through music, Abby endeavors to engage young people in discussions about pertinent issues. Her Instagram initiative, 'Teen Talks with Abby Chams,' fosters conversations among teenagers about challenges they confront and strategies to overcome them, covering topics such as cyberbullying, self-esteem, and body image. This ethos is embodied in one of Abby's favorite songs, 'I Thought,' co-written with her father, which conveys the importance of trust in challenging times.

Throughout her journey, Abby's core objective remains to inspire the youth. She ardently conveys, "Age should never constrain or limit you. When you set your mind to it, you can achieve anything."
