Analysis of Tena

When did ‘protect and serve’ become ‘comply or die?’ This is a question that King Kaka poses in his new single, featuring Jadi. This song comes after police brutality became a heated topic in our country, following the death of two brothers, from Embu. They met their deaths in the hands of the police after being caught past curfew hours. It is a tribute song, to the boys, speaking to their mother of what could have been, but was not. Tomorrow is not promised but, let us not lose our youths, or witness more deaths, in the arms of the ones who are meant to protect us.

This song by King Kaka (rabbit) was released on 31st August 2021

Lyrics of Tena

Mama

Sijui kama kesho nitaiona

Kama chakula yako nitaionja tena

Aaah

Mama

Tabasamu yako sitaiona

Nayo jua tutaiona Pamoja

Tena, nitakuona tena?

Je, nitakuona tena?

Tena,

Je, nitakuona?

Okay…

Dear mom,

I hope you are listening it is your sons

Ilikuwa tufike mapema leo that was the plan

Rafiki ya Yesu, but jana ilikuwa last supper

Makarao wameleta tafash

Our love will be forever ata ka wounds ni fresh

Now it is the end for the flesh

Best chef in the world wallahi

Chakula yako usla Ma imevai

No matter how grown we were your babies

You checked up on us daily

‘Tuvae sweater kwa njeve na hydrate kwa jua’

But haukusema tukimeet na polisi vile itakuwa

‘Stay strong bro, I’ll never let you go’

Leta mkono, ukigo pia me na go

Online, najua wasanii watachachisha

Tutawekwa kwa status na mat-shirt

God aliweka humans wasahau sana

I hope you will not forget about us mama (oh mama)

Yesterday’s paper bado ni old news

Tumeenda part of us will always be with you

Hautawai walk me down, to my future wife

Hautawai ona vile nliturn out to be in my life

Hutaona wajukuu

Hautaona my failures and wins

Hautaona simu yangu leo mama, I’m sorry

Mama

Sijui kama kesho nitaiona

Kama chakula yako nitaionja tena

Aaah

Mama

Tabasamu yako sitaiona

Nayo jua tutaiona Pamoja

Tena, nitakuona tena?

Je, nitakuona tena?

Tena,

Je, nitakuona tena?

Tena

Nitakuona tena?

Miss me cry for me

Celebrate my life

And don’t worry about the plans we made together

Because we’ve both run out of time

This time
