Turunesh, termed the "conjurer of universes," has massive melodic moments on stage and on record. Her investigation of indigenous African genres pays attention to and embraces East African women's sensuality.
This singer, who was born in Nairobi, raised in Dar es Salaam, and now lives in Vancouver, embodies East African charm. The Tanzanian singer, composer, and creative director has made a name for herself in East Africa's alternative music scene.
She's fearlessly carved a clear path of taarab and unyago-inspired music to challenge previous narratives of "African music," continually breaking down barriers, reconstructing the sonic framework, and presenting an innovative and distinctive viewpoint on the emerging Neo-Soul & RnB generation.
Turunesh's melodies embody the goddess' vitality, and she is noted for her flowing and sensuous musical style. Her lyrical panache and soft voice have established her as a leading feminist and Pan-African performer.
As a fully independent artist, she established her own record label and creative organization, Nesh Empire.
