Ruth Matete (born in 1986) is a Kenyan musician who grew up in Kakamega County. Her life journey has not been an easy one. Life has dealt her many knocks, but she has always come out on top. The gospel singer lost her spouse in 2020, and while she was mourning the father of her daughter, rumors began to circulate that she had organized her husband's murder.
Early Life
Ruth was born while her parents were still in high school. Her father went to university, while her mother married. Ruth lived with her mother and stepfather, who was a drunk who physically mistreated them. At the age of eight, she met her father, Abel Amunga, who was married at the time, and moved in with him. Her stepmother was equally violent.
One memory that she still has is of her stepmother whipping her with a'mwiko' (cooking stick) till it broke. Her stepmother simply packed her belongings and went one day. Her father chose not to remarry and instead devoted his entire life to raising her. Amunga, a veteran actor, encouraged her daughter's talent.
Education
Ruth went to school at the age of 8 when she went to live with her father. Luhya was the only language she knew at that time. They must retain the service of a teacher from her tribe until she learns Kiswahili.
She attended the following schools:
Primary - Dr. Kraph and Uhuru Elementary
High School - Maasai Girls' High School and St. Paul's Erusi
University - Daystar for a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication
Music
While at Daystar University, she joined a musical touring band abroad and traveled with them. In 2011, she returned to Kenya, leaving her father's home, and tried her hand at the Tusker Project Fame (TPF), one of the largest musical talent shows in East Africa at the time. She wowed the region with her vocal abilities when she took the top spot. Matete was never put on probation, but Judge Ian ultimately kept her on probation, not because of her poor performance but because he wanted to hear her voice again.
Husband
Former Tahidi High actor, Prince Tsyder had a relationship with the star that ended in 2014. She found love again with a Nigerian man. The two dated for nearly 3 years before deciding to swear. In 2019, the TPF winner married her sweetheart, Pastor John Apewajoye aka Dear John, in a private ceremony in a colorful garden. The ceremony took place in the presence of close relatives and friends.
This couple seems happy and has expressed their joy many times openly.
After a blissful one week into marriage, the preacher appreciated the fact that they never gave up on each other:
“I am so glad we never gave up on each other. I remember how you fasted and prayed for 40 days because of me.”
Beloved John's death
The gospel singer wrote to close friends explaining her plight and requesting
assistance. Beloved John had gotten into an accident involving a gas cylinder and was in ICU. She also mentioned her pregnancy which was at the time in the first trimester and confessed to being stressed. In the message, shared on WhatsApp, she said the family back in Nigeria was yet to be informed because she wanted to make sure her husband is okay first.
They can't do anything from there and can't travel due to the pandemic. She continued to beg them not to share photos of her late husband while he was in the hospital. On April 10, he battled his injuries. Ruth confirmed the news in writing:
My dear husband John Apewajoye has gone to be with God… I humbly ask for your prayers during this difficult time.
Many people expressed their sympathy, including Kenyan celebrities, such as Talia Oyando, Milly Chebby and Michelle Ntalami. Their hearts broke for a woman who lost her husband just 5 months after their wedding.
Controversy
As many people showed sympathy, a man named Jessee claiming to be John's manager gave Matete a frame for her husband's murder. Jessee said the marriage was not as rosy as people thought because Ruth abused her husband. He also accused her of stabbing her husband once and demanded an autopsy before burial. He further hinted that her mental health was unstable and accused her of taking money from people without giving any facts.
