Roslyne Akombe's Biography in Summary

Dr. Roselyn Kwamboka Akombe is a Kenyan citizen who works for the UN (UN). In Kenya, she is most known for her work as an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner. Many people recognized her because she appeared at multiple press conferences, answering questions with a smile on her face, a mask that disguised the intrigues at the electoral body. Her rise to the top was the consequence of unwavering dedication and hard work. She had numerous odd jobs before finding her current position, which pays well.

Roselyn Akombe resigned from the IEBC less than a year after her appointment, stating that she did not want to do a job that contradicted her values. She stated that she was leaving the country.

Education & Background

Roselyn was born many years ago in Nyamira county. Her father was a school administrator, while her mother was a teacher. She grew up in Mwembe Tayari, Kisii, before relocating to Kisumu.

The then-young girl aspired to be a lawyer because she respected people like James Orengo and Martha Karua. She was admitted to the University of Nairobi's Kikuyu campus for a bachelor's degree in education after finishing her O-levels at Nyabururu Girls High School.

IEBC

In January 2017, she was appointed as an IEBC Commissioner. This means she will take a 70% pay cut from her previous job. It is reported that she took a leave of absence to get this job and in doing so she would not be paid by the UN.

Immediately after taking this position, she became the face of attention in the Kenyan media when appearing in several press conferences. His role with IEBC included press conferences and training of field staff.

On October 18, 2017, days before the election results were overturned by the Supreme Court, Roselyn Akombe resigned as IEBC Commissioner. She flew back to New York fearing that her life was in danger and said IEBC could not hold free and fair elections due to corruption. Part of what she said was:

“The commission in its current state certainly cannot guarantee a credible election on October 26, 2017,” she said.

Taking a Stand Against Msando's Killers
In a tweet, the former IEBC commissioner stated that she was prepared to testify before an independent judicial inquest scheduled for July 29 to identify the murderers of his former colleague Chris Msando. This appears to have irritated IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, who warned her against rewriting history.
