It is safe to say, Muthoni can be considered the champion of being the first, as she was the first Kenyan beauty queen, the first African to establish a public relations firm in Kenya, and one of the county's earliest female authors. After teaching at Kahuhia Teachers Training College, she furthered her studies, became involved in broadcasting and public relations, became the first woman producer at the Kenya Broadcast Corporation, and a freelance broadcaster for BBC.

In 1974, her first novel, They Shall Be Chastised, was published followed by, What Does a Man Want? In 1985, her most important book, Password Number F. 47927: Women and Mau Mau in Kenya, appeared. The title was a reference to her identity number during the Mau Mau struggle. This fictional book dramatized the roles played by women and the strategies they adapted to during the fight for freedom.

She founded Noni's Publicity, which is known for publishing the periodical, Woman of Kenya. In the 1980s, she became a Nairobi City Councilor, a position she held until, the government replaced the council with a City Commissioner.

In 2007, she received the World YMCA Council Award, in recognition of dedicated leadership, for her involvement as a women's rights activist. She was appointed the Peace Ambassador in Kenya of the International Forum for the Literature and Culture Peace (IFLAC) in 2014.
