Muhammadu Buhari's Biography in Summary

Since 2015, Muhammadu Buhari (born on December 17, 1942) has presided over The Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He was the head of state from 1983 to 1985 and is a retired major general in the Nigerian Army.

In what would be referred to as a coup d'état, he removed Alhaji Shehu Shagari from office.

Early Life

Muhammadu Buhari was born on 17th December 1942 in Daura, Katsina State to his Fulani chieftain father; Mallam Hardo Buhari, and his mother; Zulaihat Buhari who had Hausa and Kanuri ancestry.

President Buhari is the 23rd child of his father. He was raised by his mother after his father passed away when he was four years old.

Education

Muhammadu Buhari attended primary school in Mai’adua and Daura Primary School before he joined Katsina Middle School in 1953 and later attended Katsina Provincial Secondary School from 1956 to 1961.

Later, in 1962, he enrolled in the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC). He completed his cadet training at the Mons Officer Cadet School at Aldershot, England, from 1962 to 1963. Buhari completed the Platoon Commanders' Course at the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna from November 1963 to January 1964.

He furthered his military education in 1964 by enrolling in the Mechanical Transport Officer's Course at Borden's Army Mechanical Transport School in the United Kingdom and Carlisle, Pennsylvania's US Army War College, where he earned a master's degree in strategic studies.

In 1973, he also went to Wellington, India's Defence Services Staff College.

Military Career

In 1975, President Muhammadu Buhari was part of the military coup that ousted Yakubu Gowon and as a result, he was appointed to take up the position of the military governor of Borno, formerly known as North-Eastern State. The same year, General Olusegun Obasanjo nominated him as the federal commissioner for petroleum resources.

In 1977, Buhari became the military secretary at Supreme Military Headquarters. He was also the division commander in Kaduna.

The nation's economy declined after Shehu Shagari was elected, and everyone—including the military—perceived this to be the result of corrupt politics and behavior. This prompted a second military takeover, which took place on December 31, 1983, and saw the installation of Buhari as the nation's new leader.

The previous administration had already ruined several national systems by the time he took office. He was compelled to confront crooked people head-on. He started the War Against Corruption campaign in an effort to implement constructive changes.

Political Career

Muhammadu Buhari’s political journey began in 2003 when he ran for the presidential seat but lost it to Olusegun Obasanjo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He ran again for the same position in 2007 but was defeated by Umaru Yar’Adua from PDP. In 2011, he tried again but lost to Goodluck Jonathan.

In 2014, Buhari was nominated as the presidential candidate by the All Progressive Congress party (APC) for the 2015 election. He emerged the winner among 14th contestants with 2.5 million votes more than his closest competitor, Jonathan from PDP.

In May 2014, in the wake of the Chibok Schoolgirls kidnapping, Muhammadu Buhari strongly denounced the Boko Haram insurgency. He “urged Nigerians to put aside religion, politics and all other divisions to crush the insurgency he said is fanned by mindless bigots masquerading as Muslims”.

In December 2014, Muhammadu Buhari pledged to enhance security in Nigeria if elected president. After this announcement, his approval ratings skyrocketed, largely due to Jonathan‘s apparent inability to fight Boko Haram.

Muhammadu Buhari made internal security and wiping out the militant group one of the key pillars of his campaign. In January 2015, the insurgent group “The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta” (MEND) endorsed Buhari.

In February 2015, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo quit the ruling PDP party and endorsed Buhari.

On 31 March, Jonathan called Buhari to concede and congratulate him on his election as president. Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in on 29 May 2015 in a ceremony attended by at least 23 heads of state and government.

He was re-elected as the president during the 2019 general elections held on 23rd February with 56% of the total votes.

Personal Life

In 1971, Muhammadu Buhari wed Safinatu, who would become his first wife. Together, they had five children: Zulaihat (dead), Fatima Buhari, Musa (deceased), Hadiza, and Safinatu Buhari (four girls and one male).

In 1988, he divorced Safinatu Buhari. Safinatu Buhari, the former first lady, passed away on January 14, 2006, as a result of complications from diabetes.
