Msafiri Zawose's Biography in Summary

Msafiri Zawose is Dr. Hukwe Zawose's fifth child. The name Zawose is synonymous with Tanzanian music and tradition.

Msafiri began learning music and playing the ilimba at a young age, surrounded by musicians and spending his days at art college. By his 13th birthday, he had mastered all of the signature Gogo instruments and was touring extensively across the country. His international debut was a three-month tour to Japan with his father's group Chibite, where he sang, danced, and played ndono, ngoma, and marimba.

Msafiri resolved to pick up where his father left off after his father's untimely death in 2003.

Msafiri Zawose is a Tanzanian Gogo-fusion musician.

The distinctive sound of gogo music is derived from the combination of a variety of unique instruments and vocal harmonies indigenous to the Wagogo, an ethnic group that historically inhabited central Tanzania. Msafiri is an expert on traditional Gogo instruments such as the limba (thumb piano), the filimbi (flute), the zeze (bowed/plucked lute), the ngoma (hand drums), and the marimba (xylophone).

Msafiri is the musical heir to Hukwe Zawose, a musical giant who was a founding member of Tanzania's post-independence National Dance Troupe and toured extensively as part of Peter Gabriel's Real World roster in the 1980s and 1990s.

Hukwe left a lasting legacy, but Msafiri has risen to prominence with his own spin on traditional Gogo music, fused with a variety of contemporary influences. Msafiri has developed a compelling live act that balances virtuosic instrumental playing with rich, evocative vocals, electronics, and songwriting that effortlessly switches from deeply moving to joyously uplifting, whether performing solo or leading a larger ensemble. Msafiri has performed and led educational workshops all over the world, including the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Msafiri has commercially released six full-length albums and continues to evolve his sound through a growing list of collaborations with international labels, producers, and artists.

Msafiri's album Uhamiaji was released in 2017 by Soundway Records, an award-winning independent record label based in London. Msafiri and Penya, a UK-based electronic music quartet, released Penya na Msafiri Zawose with On the Corner Records, another London-based label, in January 2020. Msafiri and Penya have continued to work together as WEMA, a supergroup that includes Photay from New York. WEMA's self-titled debut album will be released on April 29, 2022. The song "Trepidation" by Dutch producer Feiertag and Msafiri is featured on the soundtrack of FIFA 22, a video game published by Electronic Arts, one of the world's major video game publishers.

Msafiri was a co-winner of the Beyond Music Project in 2019, 2020, and 2021, a by-invitation social networking platform and musical collaboration project. Msafiri was recently nominated for "Experimental Music" at the 2021 Sondeka Awards, as well as "Best Traditional Song of the Year" at the 2021 Tanzania Music Awards, where he also won "Best Male Traditional Musician."
