M.I Abaga holds the position of CEO at Chocolate City, a prominent music label. He is a Nigerian rapper with a versatile skill set that encompasses record production, songwriting, and instrumental proficiency. Critics have drawn comparisons between M.I's rap style and that of renowned artists like Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Jay-Z. Recently, M.I's company, Chocolate City, finalized a groundbreaking agreement with Warner Music.
Born Jude Abaga on October 4, 1981, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Abaga. His heritage traces back to the Jukum lineage of Takum in Taraba State, Nigeria. Among his siblings are his younger brother Jesse Jagz, also a notable figure in the Nigerian music scene, and Jason Abaga. Due to his upbringing in Jos, M.I is fluent in Hausa.
Jude attended Baptist High School in Jos, where his parents recognized his musical inclination. His mother provided him with basic music notations to enhance his musical understanding and later gifted him a 7-key mini piano for personal practice. During his formative years, he drew inspiration from artists like Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley, Jay-Z, DMX, and Fela Ransom Kuti. His education took him to Calvin College in Michigan, USA, where he initially studied Engineering for a year before shifting to Business and Economics.
M.I explored poetry and comedy at certain points, but his music passion prevailed. While at Calvin College from 1999 to 2003, he participated in the school's significant hip-hop events and contests. At the "HipHopera" show, he secured third place.
Jude Abaga embarked on his music journey in 2003, upon returning to Nigeria. Collaborating with his friend Djinee, he began producing mixtapes that led to the hit single "Safe." The track gained widespread attention and airplay on African radio stations and MTV Vibe.
Together with his brother Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Ruby, Threadstone, Lindsay, Moses-Elbulk, and E-kelly, M.I formed the group Loopy Music. Subsequently, he signed with the esteemed Nigerian music label, Chocolate City, and relocated from Jos to Abuja. His contract with Chocolate City propelled him to a successful music career. Presently, M.I Abaga is a seasoned professional in his field, even being labeled the future of African Hip Hop by DIV.
In addition to leading Chocolate City, M.I has produced for and collaborated with numerous artists, including Don Jazzy, Threadstone, Kel, Djinee, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Ruby, Lindsey, Leony, and Wizkid. Despite his position as Chocolate City's CEO, he maintains his own production company, Rytchus Era Productions, alongside his brother Jesse Jagz.
M.I Abaga has played a pivotal role in promoting emerging artists like Wizkid, Vypa, Jesse Jagz, Ruby, Pype, Ice Prince, Brymo, and KhaliGraph Jones.
Furthermore, his music has contributed to a notable Northern presence within the Nigerian music scene, reflecting his aim to unify the country through music. This endeavor has earned him the title of Nigeria's Hip Hop Messiah among Nigerian hip hop enthusiasts.
In 2013, M.I Abaga became a Glo Mobile brand ambassador, sharing the role with other Nigerian artists like Omawunmi and Burna Boy. That same year, he was selected as one of the judges for the Glo X-Factor competition.
Recognizing his impact, the United Nations appointed M.I Abaga as a Goodwill Ambassador in 2012.
