Simon Kimani, alias Bamboo, is a Kenyan MC who lives in New York City. He was reared in Inglewood, California, by parents of East African origin, and at the age of 17, he was transported to Nairobi, Kenya to avoid the potentially violent life he may have had if he stayed in Inglewood. Bamboo brought his fame from California to Nairobi, producing his first album, Nairoberry, with K-South in 2001. In Nairobi, he co-founded the record label Project 254 with Kenyan emcees Tim Waindi and Attitude. Bamboo is also a member of the label The Grass Company, and he plans to re-record an earlier album "just the way [they] did it in Kenya but now with state-of-the-art equipment" in Atlanta, Georgia.
Bamboo Career
Bamboo was included in the film Hip Hop Colony as one of Kenya's premier rappers, as well as in a short featuring himself and emcees Big Mike and Attitude rapping over live guitar chords. Bamboo's style is a combination of American and Kenyan content with a decidedly American accent and flow. When asked why the majority of his tracks are in English, Bamboo answered, "Rapping in English is the only way to join the US rap game and earn respect, because no one would deal with you without that respect."
