Makena Njeri, real name Christine Njeri, is a producer, performer, and director all rolled into one. She rose to prominence in Kenya after starring as 'Makena' in the then-popular Citizen TV high school drama series Tahidi High. Makena was one of the performers who portrayed high school life, and they did a wonderful job. After the show ended, she moved on to work for Nation Media Group and the BBC.
Njeri is a brave person who came out to declare to the world that she is a part of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTIQ) community. It has taken a lot of grace and guts for her to get to where she is today. She has been through a lot, including despair. And has dated Mitchelle Ntalami
Background
The actress's life was not always easy. She was depressed after learning that her father had infected her mother with HIV/AIDS. She said in an open interview with Grace Msalame on NTV's Unscripted with Grace that she would run across her father in town with different women and that he was also abusive to the mother. Her mother did not inform them that she was infected, and she suffered from acute depression without receiving any treatment.
"She (mother) suffered from serious despair and a psychological breakdown." So those are the things I still worry about to this day; she didn't have to go through that. She would take medication (ARVs) and claim that it was for a nervous breakdown. That's all we knew."
Career
Christine Njeri rose to prominence after landing the role of Makena in Tahidi High, a moniker that has clung with her like glue throughout the years. She effortlessly played this character and was just great on TV, which opened many chances for her.
She went on to become a producer and director after graduating from Tahidi High. She was the creator of the popular NTV show Teen Republic. She subsequently departed to work as a producer for the BBC for three years.
