Kativui Mweene's Biography in Summary

Kativui is one of the most prominent Kamba benga musicians. Some would argue that Kativui is THE top Kamba benga music artist, based on the large number of fans who consistently attend his shows. Even on a national scale, Kativui is unquestionably one of Kenya's top benga musicians.
Kativui is the leader of the Kyaume Boys Band. Kativui previously performed with Ken wa Maria's Yatta Orchestra International (then known as the Yatta Boys Band). I once heard that before joining Yatta, Kativui played with Mbovi's Maluini Boyz Band.
He is an accomplished solo/lead guitarist. He is also a good vocalist.

But his forte is composition, and he has written dozens, if not hundreds, of songs that have gone on to become hits throughout Ukambani and beyond. Some of the words he coined in his songs have since become part of common Kamba vocabulary.
It is difficult to obtain a complete biography of Kativui because he is not known to give media interviews frequently. Or, as one Nation newspaper journalist once put it, Kativui prefers to communicate with his fans through music. Indeed, he has discussed his life in several of his songs, and these can be used to piece together a biography.

Kativui, for example, tells us in his volume 3 hit song 'Mami Bethi' that he was born to Elizabeth Munee and Mutua Muyanga in the Kako area of Makueni county several decades ago. He goes on to say that his family was poor, with his father frequently having to do menial jobs like clearing new lands for cultivation and other difficult tasks. Kativui also mentions coming from a large family of eight, with him being the fourth born.
In a later volume, he describes how he had to relocate from Kako to his maternal grandfather's home in Yathui Musoka.
He goes on to describe how his maternal grandfather cared for him, despite the fact that one of his aunts may have treated him cruelly.
In 'Mami Bethi', he describes how he became possessed by the spirit of music, making him a controversial figure in the village. And how he worked hard to become a music star despite having only a modest education.
Kativui's hit songs include Manzala, Kadoli, Mali Kamuwetangi, Ula Savuni, Syuo sya Kativui, Mbaika, Ngaati Sukalini, Cynthia Kasupuu, Osa Ngethi Wanzanze (in honor of Ken Wa Maria), Mami Bethi (autobiographical song), and Mumbi wa Katuti, among others.

Kativui and Wamaria are enemies.

Wamaria and Kativui, two kamba musicians, clashed at a club in Mlolongo. The club was open as usual, and everything was fine until Wamaria, who was drinking with Kibwezi Mp Hon. Kaloki, realized he was sharing a club with his enemy Kativui. Wamaria, who is used to fighting with fellow kamba musicians, went ahead and started a fight, but it never happened because the kativuiz bouncer gave him a memorable blow, causing him to return to his table and break all of the beer bottles. Wamaria left the pub, and things returned to normal. Maybe this is what Kativui means by KUTILA KIVUTHYA.
