Full Bio of Mutahi Kagwe

Kagwe Mungai is somewhat of a musical voyager. Born in Nairobi’s Jamuhuri Estate, he finds it difficult to pinpoint his childhood neighborhood, known in Nairobi as the ‘mtaa’, because he moved frequently. His childhood included time in Uganda and South Africa, before returning to Kenya and later moving to the UK for college. His mother’s career required frequent relocations, and young Kagwe, the second of three boys, accompanied her.

While constant moving might unsettle other children, for Kagwe, it was an advantage, enriching his musical experience. At the age of 10, he was already playing in a rock band, The Jack Russels, formed with nine school friends in Johannesburg where his mother was working. Most schools he attended taught music and had recording studios, which introduced him to the music business. Outside of schoolwork, he spent a lot of time practicing with the equipment, teaching himself to play the saxophone, keyboard, and drums. At St Peter’s School, he switched from rock to jazz, forming the St Peter’s Jazz Band with three schoolmates, playing mostly at shopping malls.

His time in South Africa ended when his mother moved to Kenya briefly, then to Uganda. Eventually, Kagwe settled at Nairobi’s Brookhouse School, deciding to pursue music seriously. He had been oscillating between Medicine and Law, but neither proved enticing enough. At Brookhouse, he formed an a cappella group with friends, inspired by Eric Wainaina’s group Five Alive and influenced by artists like Michael Jackson, Kool & the Gang, The Commodores, and Jay-Z. He also admired African musicians Hugh Masekela and Oliver Mtukudzi.

As the head of the school’s orchestra, Kagwe led performances wherever they were invited. After school, he continued his musical dream, enrolling at the University of Southampton in the UK for a three-year course in Music and Management Sciences. There, he honed his recording skills, often working late into the night in the college studio. Initially focused on being a producer, he started recording his own music to test it on an audience. Back in Nairobi, he approached club DJs in Westlands to play his music, following a strategy similar to Madonna’s early career. This approach led to his first official release, "Chips Funga," becoming a massive club hit.

The song, described as Afro-house, was recorded in Kagwe’s kitchen store late one night when going to the studio wasn’t an option. To soundproof the room, he used mattresses and cushions, and recorded with a computer and a microphone, hoping not to wake his family. Buoyed by the success of "Chips Funga," Kagwe set a goal to release one song every week for a year, inspired by rapper Kanye West. This challenging task led to his first compilation CD, "It Only Gets Better," which he uploaded on Soundcloud for free download and feedback. He believes in always moving forward, hence the album’s title, and chose to release his music for free to gain traction in a crowded market.

Kagwe aims to have his music celebrated locally first to achieve global recognition. "It Only Gets Better" includes tracks like "Marry You," "Hey Mama," and "Get Down." He has performed at events such as Blankets and Wine, the Carnival 2012 at Kasarani Stadium, and other venues, backed by Sikin on vocals and David Gitoho on bass.
