Mutyambai was born in 1964 in Mwala, Machakos County.
He earned his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Nairobi and his master's degree in national security policy from the Australian National University.
He is married to Susan Nzioki, a professor, and the parent of two children.
Where did he start?
Mutyambai joined the Directorate of Security Intelligence in 1998 and worked his way up to become the deputy director in charge of counter-terrorism.
Mutyambai is praised for collaborating with police and military troops in the war against terrorism in this capacity.
He was previously the regional intelligence coordinator for Nairobi and Mombasa counties.
Mutyambai worked as a political attaché in Kenya's foreign service at the high commission in Kampala from 2000 until 2004.
Where did he get his training?
He has got training from all over the world.
He received counterterrorism training in New Orleans, the United States, operational management training in the United Kingdom, advanced security analysis training in the United States once more, and policing, intelligence, and counter-terrorism training in Israel.
He has also obtained local senior management training at the Kenya School of Government and the Kenya School of Revenue Administration, where he was trained in the detection and prevention of fraud and forgeries.
Some of his noteworthy work
His professional counter-terrorism training was put to use during the January 14 Riverside terror incident. He oversaw the rescue of approximately 700 Kenyans as well as the assassination of the attackers.
