Her first international experience came at the 2011 Military World Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she won bronze in the 800m and fourth in the 1500m.

She won her first global title in 2012, clocking an 8:37.16 over 3000 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul.

A year after winning bronze in the 1500m at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, she won silver in the 3000m at the World Indoor Championships in Poland.

She finished second only to multiple world record holder Genzebe Dibaba. In 2014, she added a 1500m title from the African Championships.
 

Obiri finished second in 14:29.77 at the 2016 Rio Olympics, trailing compatriot Vivian Cheruiyot, who set an Olympic record with a time of 14:26.17, and ahead of Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana.

She won the 5000m gold medal ahead of Almaz Ayana and Sifan Hassan at the 2017 World Championships in London. In addition, in March 2019, she won the women's senior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. The event was held in the Danish town of Aarhus. She completed the 10.2-kilometer race in 36:14.


She won the 5000m at the Doha World Championships in October, setting a championship record of 14:26.72. Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi finished second, with Konstanze Klosterhalfen finishing third.
 

She competed in both the women's 5000m and 10,000m events for Kenya at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She finished second in the former in 14:38.36, trailing only Hassan, who ran 14:36.79; Gudaf Tsegay took bronze in 14:38.87. Obiri finished fourth in the 10,000m final in a personal best, trailing Hassan, Kalkidan Gezahegne, and Letesenbet Gidey.
