Hassan Joho's Biography in Summary

Hassan Joho, the slay queen from Mombasa is a darlng to many despite the political status. He is the immediate former governer of Mombasa county.

Family of Hassan Joho

The city governor disclosed in an interview with Churchill that although his mother had passed away, his father was still living. He claimed that his father, who used to work for the Kenya Ports Authority, is still in good physical shape. He has two sisters and an older brother named Abubakar Joho.

The governor has four children with his wife, Madina Hassan Joho.

Education

He went to Tom Mboya Primary School, but a year's worth of classes were cut short by a lack of school fees. Joho continued on to Serani Secondary School and began working odd jobs in Form 3 to support himself. The Governor carried bags on his back while working at the port and then discovered other methods to make a living once Somalia descended into civil conflict. He became a highly skilled salesperson because he assisted them in selling a variety of goods.

In an interview with the comedian Daniel Ndambuki, the governor said:

“I used to carry heavy sacks whenever goods entered the port. I remember that is how I met Somalis who used to import stuff to Kenya and promised myself that I would never be employed,” he shared.

Joho added that his principal understood when he went to school looking all shabby:

“From school, I used to work. At some point, I even had some kind of agreement with the principal because my background is different, probably from all the other kids here, so you must allow me space to be able to do certain things. Like don’t judge me with my uniform, if I come sometimes dirty, just understand,” he revealed.

For his university, he is said to have studied first at Kampala university then Gretsa University in Thika.

Career

Joho began his political career in 2002, and in 2004 he was elected to lead the Liberal Democratic Party's Kisauni party.

He contested for the Kisauni parliamentary seat in 2007 and was successful thanks to the Orange Democratic Movement. After the elections, he was chosen to serve in the grand coalition administration as assistant minister for transportation.

He was chosen as Mombasa Country's first governor on March 4, 2013. His opponent filed a legal motion to stop his oath of office, claiming that the elections were rigged. His request was turned down, and the swearing-in continued.

He successfully defended his political position in 2017 and was chosen to serve a second term as the county governor of Mombasa.

Disputing Drug Allegations

Following the request for an investigation from his Nandi colleague Stephen Sang, rumors concerning Joho's involvement in the illegal drug trade gained additional attention. But there has never been any proof to back up these reports. Additionally, according to The Standard, the Nandi Governor demanded in a letter to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji that Joho and his brother be charged with drug trafficking. Even before he was chosen to serve as governor, these accusations started to circulate.

He said it was sad that some would try to discredit him by connecting him to narcotics in a 2016 interview with KTN. He claimed that when the accusations initially surfaced, it was a difficult moment for him and his family, but they managed to get through it.

Academic credentials

In 2017, charges of the falsification of his academic credentials from his school and university education surfaced. According to reports, he earned a D- on the 1993 KCSE exam rather than a C+ in the 1992 exam. Given that a C+ is required for admission to Gretsa University, this brought attention to the degree he earned there. The governor received a degree in commerce in 2016, the vice chancellor of Gretsa, Kuria Thuo, reportedly told Business Daily. Just before the 2017 general elections, a number of cases were filed against him as a result of these allegations.
