Ferguson Rotich's Biography in Summary

Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich (born November 30, 1989) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner who specializes in the 800m. He has a personal best for the event of 1:42.54 minutes. He represented Kenya at the 2013 World Athletics Championships and won gold in the 4800m relay at the 2014 IAAF World Relays. He took silver in the 2020 Summer Olympics, finishing second to his countryman Emmanuel Korir.

He was a latecomer to the sport, making his debut in the 2013 season at the age of 23. He won the 800 m at the Meeting Grand Prix IAAF de Dakar, clocking 1:45.40 minutes.

He went under one minute and 45 seconds for the first time in his first race in Europe, finishing fourth at the Golden Spike Ostrava.  In July, he finished second to Anthony Chemut in the Kenyan trials, improving to 1:44.38 minutes.  This resulted in his selection for the 2013 World Athletics Championships. He advanced to the semi-finals and was initially ranked fifth before being disqualified for a lane violation.  He finished the year with two third-place finishes on the 2013 IAAF Diamond League circuit, at the Weltklasse Zürich and the Memorial Van Damme.

The latter race was the fastest of the year, and Rotich's time of 1:43.22 minutes placed him third in the world that season, a rapid rise for the athlete who was unranked in 2012.

He finished third in the first meet of the 2014 IAAF Diamond League in Doha.  He was chosen for the 4800m relay team (along with Sammy Kibet Kirongo, Job Koech Kinyor, and Alfred Kipketer) at the inaugural 2014 IAAF World Relays event, and led Kenya to a gold medal.

Rotich stunned world record holder David Rudisha in the 800 metres at the 2015 Athletics Kenya World Championship Trials, beating him by nearly half a second to qualify for the 2015 World Championships in Athletics.
