Eugene Mbugua is a Kenyan entrepreneur, writer, film producer, and director. Young Rich Television Ltd's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director is him.
Mbugua, who is only 30, has established himself as one of Kenya's wealthiest people under the age of 40, thanks to his interests in entertainment, real estate, beef farming, advertising and publishing, and television.
He made a name for himself in the Kenyan film industry when one of his productions was broadcast on national television when he was only 22 years old.
Education & Background
Mbugua was born in the month of November 1990.
Between 2005 and 2008, the 30-year-old attended Upper Hill School in Nairobi. Later, he attended the United States International University (USIU) and graduated in 2013 with a degree in Journalism and Television Production.
Career
Mbugua's journey from rags to riches is fascinating. He grew up poor, which fueled his desire for success in life.
He would juggle classes and side hustles to make money as a student. He worked as a director at Tunawashow Junior Media from 2009 to 2013. He was a student at USIU at the time.
Between February 2010 and November 2012, he also worked as a film teacher at Makini School. He used to walk all the way from Roysambu to Makini because he didn't have enough money for a bus ticket.
Big Opportunity
As he walked or commuted from Roysambu to Makini, he discovered that some of the properties along the way belonged to successful young people. That is where he got his first show idea.
The show, titled Young Rich, featured Kenyan millionaires under the age of 40 discussing business and how they made their money.
He pitched the show to a number of media outlets before it was picked up by K24 TV. The first episode aired on the eve of his graduation from USIU in 2013.
Television Programs
In 2013, the young entrepreneur established his own production company, Young Rich Television. He then went on to produce a number of other shows.
Get in The Kitchen, Our Perfect Wedding, Stori Yangu, My Friend, Being Bahati, Foods of Kenya, and The Best Of are just a few of the shows that have aired on K24 TV, KTN, NTV, Maisha Magic East, Showmax, Iflix, Kwese, Startimes, and Trigger (South Africa).
Young Rich TV also produces Sol Family, a reality television show about the award-winning music group Sauti Sol.
Mbugua has recently expressed interest in entering the Tanzanian market and has visited the country, meeting with some of the country's most prominent artists.
Businesses
Mbugua is passionate about business and building wealth for himself, and despite coming from a low-income family, he has made it a point to never look back.
"I've been poor in the past, and I don't want to be poor again." "As long as I see poverty behind me, I'll always be running ahead," he told Citizen Digital in an August 2020 interview.
Mbugua is the managing director of the Nairobi CBD's Number 7 club and bar, as well as the Westlands' Number 7 Lion.
He is also the CEO of My Yearbook Kenya Ltd, a publishing company that produces yearbooks for schools, businesses, and the government.
The young entrepreneur is also a beef farmer. He and his friends run a feedlot in Isinya, Kajiado County, where they buy bulls and fatten them for 12 weeks to become premium beef before selling them.
Awards
Mbugua was named one of Kenya's Top 40 Under 40 Entrepreneurs by Business Daily in 2014. Eugene won the Kalasha Award for his work on the film Child for Hire the same year.
In 2016, he was named one of Forbes' 30 most promising African entrepreneurs under the age of 30, a feat he repeated in 2017.
