HILARY OKELLO, 28, is a clinician-turned- standup comedian, who has not only performed at comedy shows in Uganda but also in Kenya and Rwanda. He explained Quick Talk why he dropped the white coat for the mic.
He is a medic by profession, but his performances may create medical issues as he breaks your ribs with his unusual perspective on life. A thousand jokes a day couldn't distract you from his seamless observational comedy.
Okello has performed on the Comedy Store stage, in Hot 100 FM studios, and at comedy shows across the country, but he will not be sharing the spotlight on June 26, 2022.
Who is Hilary?
My name is Hilary Okello and that is what I still go with as my stage name. I am a medical clinician and also a standup comedian. I am also into screen writing and acting. Basically, I abandoned medicine and took seriously the idea that “laughter is the best medicine.”
I am a Langi who grew up primarily in Kampala. However, after I finished primary five at Nakasero Primary School, my father was unhappy because I knew a lot of Luganda but not my home tongue; so, for primary six and seven, he moved me to Lira to learn my language.
So you're a real doctor?
Yes, but I no longer practice because I am now a full-time comedian. But I practiced medicine for four years until last year, when my humor took off and I decided to focus on it. However, I plan to return to practicing medicine in the future when I have more time.
Are most of your fans aware that you are a doctor?
Most of them don't; they think the title is simply for show; it's not until they interact with me or get to know me well enough that they realize I'm a real doctor.
Why comedy?
Comedy has always been my passion since it allows you to have both a profession and an occupation. So, while I work as a medical clinician, I spend most of my time on stage performing humor.
How did you get started, in the first place?
I started comedy while attending Jinja College from 2009 until 2012. While there, I joined the Current Affairs Club, which covered news from the school and around the country.
When I first joined the club, I was the one who always read the humorous news, which is how I began creating jokes.
Professionally, I began in 2017 while still in university. I joined a comedy club in Centenary Park and soon began competing in comedy competitions such as Uganda's Next Top Comedian, and I gradually continued to grow and improve my trade.
