In 2008, he demonstrated his improving form by winning the Alexander the Great Marathon. He won the Italian Marathon in Carpi in 2:10:50 hours, more than a minute faster than his previous best time.
The following season, he set a personal best of 2:09:42 hours at the Maratona di Sant'Antonio in Padua, breaking the race record and becoming the first runner to complete the course in less than two hours and ten minutes. He dropped out of the Venice Marathon in October due to stomach issues, but he was determined not to waste his training for the distance and instead signed up for the Florence Marathon in November. He won the men's title in Florence by one second over Reuben Kosgei, his second consecutive victory of the year.

He has a personal best marathon time of 2:09:26 hours and has won several races in Europe, including the Italian Marathon, Florence Marathon, and Maratona di Sant'Antonio in Padua.
Chebet was among the top runners until the 30 km mark of the 2010 Rome City Marathon, when he dropped out. In his first race in the Southern Hemisphere, he finished second at Australia's Gold Coast Marathon. He came close to winning the Padua race for the second time in 2011.
