Kenyan professional tennis player Angella Okutoyi plays the sport. With her win over Rose Marie Nijkamp in the girls' junior Wimbledon event, she became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam championship. Okutoyi made history at the 2022 Australian Open by becoming the first Kenyan player to win a girls' junior singles Grand Slam match.
In the last match of the African Games in Ghana, Kenya's sixth gold medal was won by tennis star Angella Okutoyi, who defeated Egypt's Lamis Abdelaziz 6-4, 6-2.
As the first Kenyan woman to win this renowned title in almost 50 years, since Jane Davies-Doxzon's victory back in 1978, Okutoyi, at the young age of 20, has created history.
In addition to making Okutoyi's name in Kenyan sports history, this historic victory sets her up for an Olympic dream—so long as she breaks into the top 400 rankings.
In the semifinals, Okutoyi took against Mayar Sherif of Egypt, a 70th-ranked tennis player in the world. The epic match lasted for four hours and twenty-seven minutes.
