Jeffrey Kimathi is the founder and proprietor of Jamhuri Wear, a streetwear company. The apparel line is well-known in Harlem, New York, and has been worn by some of the world's most famous people.
He started the apparel line with the goal of putting Africa and its rich legacy and culture on the global map, something he thought was lacking in the United States despite the city's large black population.
Relocating to the United States
Kimathi migrated to the United States after possibilities in Kenya became scarce. As an artist, he believed that the country did not provide enough opportunities for his personal and professional development. As a result, he sought to relocate abroad.
Moving back to Nairobi
Kimathi relocated to Nairobi in order to investigate market potential in his homeland.
He observes that relocation to Africa presented new obstacles to his business, forcing him to make swift modifications.
Kimathi advises young fashion designers to take advantage of existing technologies and internet platforms in order to expand their brands. He also emphasizes the need of finding partners with complementary skill sets.
