Folarin Falana (born October 27, 1990), better known by his stage name Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, media personality, filmmaker, and actor.
Before his professional career as a music artist began in 2009, the Nigerian star began his calling in secondary school, when he formed a group called "The School Boys" with a friend. Falz rose to prominence after releasing the song "Marry Me," which featured Ladipoe and Yemi Alade on vocals.
He currently runs his own independent record label, Bahd Guys Records. In 2014, he released his debut album, Wazup Guy. Stories That Touch, his second album, was released in 2015.
He released 27 in 2017 and Moral Instruction, his fourth studio album, in 2019.
Falz's Early Life & Education
Falz was born on October 27, 1990, in the Mushin local government area of Lagos State. He has a sister named Fola Falana.
His parents, Funmi Falana and Femi Falana, are renowned lawyers and human rights activists. He completed his legal studies and was called to the bar in 2012 after graduating from the Nigeria Law School in Abuja.
Falz attended St. Leo’s Catholic Primary School in Ikeja for his primary education and later Olashore International School in Osun State for his secondary education. He pursued his higher education at the University of Reading, England, earning an LLB honors degree in Law.
Falz's Career
Falz's interest in music started during secondary school. He formed a music duo named "The School Boys" with a friend and released some of their recordings as a mixtape titled "Shakara: The Mixtape" in 2009.
He gained traction in the Nigerian music scene with singles like "WazUp Guy," "High Class," and "Currency" in 2011.
In 2014, Falz was recognized by tooXclusive as one of the "Artistes To Watch in 2014." He released his debut studio album, "Wazup Guy," on May 30, 2014. The album featured tracks produced by Studio Magic, DJ Woske, Tin Tin, and Spellz, among others. It included guest appearances from artists like Olamide, Show Dem Camp, Phenom, and Yemi Alade.
Falz released several hit singles such as "Ello Bae" and "Marry Me." His second studio album, "Stories That Touch," was released in November 2015.
He won awards for his acting roles, including "Best Actor in a Comedy Movie/Series" at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for his role in "Jenifa's Diary" and the "Viewer's Choice Best New International Act" at the 2016 BET Awards.
Falz collaborated with Simi on the EP "Chemistry" in 2016. He surprised fans with the release of his album "27" on his 27th birthday in 2017. The album featured prominent artists like Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy, and more.
In 2018, he released the music video "This Is Nigeria," inspired by Childish Gambino's "This Is America," addressing Nigerian social issues. The song was banned by the NBC, leading Falz to sue them for N100 million.
In 2020, Falz launched his film production company, House21TV, along with a new comedy series, "Therapy."
Falz's Personal Life
Rumors once linked Falz romantically with Simi before her marriage to Adekunle Gold. However, these speculations were dispelled. As of now, Falz is single with no children or spouse.
